In Expressions of the Army we asked Army photographers to select ten photographs that represent their work documenting the life of British Army soldiers.

As a soldier they are prepared, as a photographer they are creative. Carrying their own photographic equipment, as well as their military equipment, Army Photographers can regularly be carrying over 35kg of equipment.

Expressions of the Army, which is exhibited around Edinburgh takes the viewer beyond the perceptions gained from the media and takes you into the lives of soldiers by the photographers who live among them.

There are six locations across Edinburgh in our outdoor photography exhibition. The majority of the locations are Army reserve buildings, which are situated in different areas of Edinburgh.

If you can’t get to all of the locations you can look at a slideshow of the works and learn about the photographers by clicking the slideshow button:

If you do want to get out and about, below is a map that has all the locations of the exhibition marked out and information on how to reach each location.

All locations are reachable by bus and some by tram. All the locations, except Edinburgh Castle, are free to visit. They are, apart from Edinburgh Castle, also accessible by car, as they are in residential areas so may have parking available but it is not guaranteed.

It is recommended to put the address of each location into a map application on your smartphone if you have one, as the locations are not always obviously found.

As the locations are spaced out throughout the city this gives you the opportunity to stretch your viewing of the exhibition over the duration of August. Combine your visiting of the photographs with exploring different areas of Edinburgh that are not always highlighted or explored when people come to visit Edinburgh.

The numbers provided below are not a suggestion for a route, they are simply markers.

Edinburgh Castle- point 1 on the map

This location is the only one where a ticket for access to the Castle will need to be bought as the photographs are displayed inside the castle walls. Tickets for the Castle are purchasable via the Edinburgh Castle website.

The Castle is easily reached on foot if you are in the centre of Edinburgh.
